Allergy Truth from Dr. “Wicked Hand”

I had some health problems when I was five years old. In fact, I was so weak and frail that my parents were worried that I might not survive. They took me to several doctors and the best they could guess was that I might have a serious illness. I was tired and lethargic all the time. I couldn’t put any meat on my skinny bones. Out of desperation, Mom and Dad took me to a foreign doctor who, I’m told, had a sketchy reputation. Nevertheless, he was known to be successful with some of the more unusual cases. He practiced medicine out of a single-wide home in a trailer park near our farm. His name was Dr. Wickenham, but all the kids just called him Dr. Wicked Hand. It didn’t take long for this unconventional doctor to discover my problem …

I had food allergies. I remember that one of the items he told me to stop eating was ketchup, which didn’t make me happy since that happened to be my favorite “vegetable.” My parents changed my diet and I began experiencing results. My energy returned and I was able, for the first time, to run and play and keep up with the other kids. I gained confidence and became more competitive. I remember playing football and receiving a kick-off. I charged into a dozen kids like a mad rhino, breaking through the pack with speed I’d never experienced before, making a glorious touchdown. I’m as good as they are, I thought. Maybe even better. Soon I was baling hay and picking rocks out of the fields with my brothers and my dad. I felt like a new person. I’m glad my parents stepped outside of mainstream medicine to find the remedy I needed. I’m also grateful for Dr. Wicked Hand, who did for me what no other doctor could.
