Dog Yeast/Ear Infections

Dog Ear Infections: What are the Causes?

If you have a canine companion, chances are it will experience at least one ear infection during its lifetime. Here’s why:

  • Yeast: Did you know pets can get yeast infections? In fact, yeast is usually the culprit behind ear infections in dogs.

  • Diet: Yeast overgrowth in pets (and in humans) is often attributed to diet and antibiotic use. If your dog has had antibiotics or is allergic to its food, ear infections and yeast infections are potential side effects.

  • Allergies: Dogs with allergies are more prone to chronic ear and skin irritations.

  • Water: When your dog gets water in its ears during a bath or dive in the lake, leftover moisture can cause infection. So, although Sparky’s big, floppy ears are simply adorable, their shape can trap water and dirt, increasing Sparky’s likelihood of a reaction.

What are the Symptoms?

The telltale symptoms of a dog ear infection are:

  • Excess scratching of the ear area

  • Inflammation and/or skin irritation

  • A foul odor coming from the ear

  • Frequent shaking of the head
